Jürgen Klopp has promised that there will be no guarantees for any of Liverpool’s trio of “really good” goalkeeping options for the 2017/18 season.
It seems as though Jürgen Klopp is happy enough with the goalkeeping options at his disposal to not need to sign another stopper this summer window.
However, the German has promised that none of Loris Karius, Simon Mignolet or Danny Ward will be guaranteed game time as he plans to pit the trio against each other in a battle for the number one spot.
Starting with pre-season, the trio will all be given equal opportunities to impress ahead of the coming campaign.
“That’s very comfortable for the manager, three really good goalkeepers,” Klopp told Liverpoolfc.com.
“It is like it is and nothing is decided, they can all show how good they are. I don’t want to bring doubt so that they start doubting. They are at a fantastic club and a fantastic football club needs fantastic goalkeepers. We had a really good goalkeeping season.”
The initial impression last season was that Karius would come in as Klopp’s new first-choice option but a number of high-profile errors saw Mignolet come back in and reclaim his spot for the final 4 months of the season.
Klopp has admitted that his decision to drop his younger countryman was initially not an easy one to make.
“Yes, it was a little bit difficult for Loris but I’m sure he had his part in the development of Simon, who played a really good season. And Danny played a fantastic season at Huddersfield with a big success at the end.
“We have three goalkeepers and they can all show what they are able to do, and then we will see who will start.”
It is likely that come the start of the season, Simon Mignolet will retain his first-choice spot from last season but it will be interesting to see just how far Loris Karius and Danny Ward can push him over the opening months of the new campaign.
