Following their struggles to sign Virgil van Dijk, Liverpool have reportedly turned their attentions to Lyon centre back Emanuel Mammana.
Reports spearheaded by Goal’s Melissa Reddy last night claimed that a permanent move to Crystal Palace could be imminent for out of favour Liverpool centre back Mamadou Sakho and it seems the Reds have already identified their chosen replacement.
The Sport Review believe that the Reds have tabled a £14.9m bid for 21-year old Lyon centre back Emanuel Mammana and would be willing to offer the Argentine international a five-year deal worth £54,000 a week.
However, Mammana – who is contracted to the French club until 2021 – is said to be awaiting permission from his current employers to speak to Liverpool personally, preferring for a deal to be agreed between the two clubs before entering negotiations.
The centre-back, who has represented Argentina at a senior level three times, was signed by Lyon from River Plate last summer despite interest from the likes of Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur.
The links do come as a bit of a surprise with Klopp looking to bolster his first team defensive options this summer, as despite Mammana being a recognised talent for the future, he does not possess the same pedigree as other touted centre back targets Virgil van Dijk, Stefan De Vrij and Kalidou Koulibaly.
The Argentine would, however, represent a solid squad option – especially if the likes of Lucas Leiva and Joe Gomez head out either permanently or on loan – with the Reds set to be competing on four fronts this season.
Mammana made 24 appearances in all competitions for Olympique Lyon last season, scoring one goal and contributing to 4 Ligue 1 clean sheets. At just 21-years old, he is still very much a raw talent but is viewed as one of Europe’s brightest defensive prospects.
