Liverpool FC’s new club-record signing Mohamed Salah could be about to take the coveted number nine jersey at the club. No pressure Mo!
No seriously, no pressure Mo. Liverpool’s last four signings to wear the number nine jersey scored a grand total of 25 goals in 149 games for the club. Play like you did last season and you’ll be over halfway there!
In all seriousness, it looks like Liverpool Football Club has a new number nine on their books with Egyptian winger Mohamed Salah opting to take the coveted shirt when his move is finalised this week.
The 25-year old was said to be keen on the number 11 – the same as he wore at Roma – but Brazilian forward Roberto Firmino is already in possession of that jersey and seems to be rather fond of it.
The Egyptian will join a list of Liverpool legends such as Fernando Torres, Ian Rush and Robbie Fowler in representing the club with ‘9’ on his back and Klopp will be hoping that he can emulate one of that trio rather than one of the last four to wear the jersey.
The likes of Christian Benteke, Rickie Lambert, Iago Aspas and Andy Carroll have all opted to take on the mantle of becoming Liverpool’s number 9 in recent years and have failed miserably to make the desired impact.
With Salah seemingly a perfect fit for a manager like Jürgen Klopp and the high intensity, fast-paced brand of football he endorses, I personally don’t see him having the same issues.
Salah’s medical is set for Wednesday and if all goes as expected then he will put pen to paper on a five-year deal thought to be worth £90,000 a week. Now, where’s my wallet so I can go and buy a brand new ‘Salah 9’ jersey?
