Joe Gomez will be given a chance to prove he can compete for a first team place in pre-season before any decisions are made on his future.
Jürgen Klopp has decided he will give youngster Joe Gomez a chance to prove his fitness and ability to compete for a first team place during pre-season, before making any decisions over potential loan deals. The Liverpool Echo reports that the 20 year old is “attracting interest of a host of clubs, but the Reds believe he DOES have a future at the club.”
Gomez missed most of the 2015/16 season after suffering an ACL injury during international duty just after Klopp’s arrival, before an achilles problem saw him sidelined until November during 2016/17. The defender made just 3 appearances last season for the first team – all in the FA Cup.
Klopp is said to remain a huge fan of the teenager but with the Reds confirmed to be after another centre back in the transfer market this summer, it’s thought a Premier League loan move would “be considered if it was in the player’s best interests.”
The club are however, said to be wary of sending Gomez out on loan and seeing him go to the “wrong club,” given the amount of football he has already missed over the last two years.
The Reds do already have Matip, Lovren, Klavan and Lucas at the club as senior centre back options but it is accepted that due to the fact they’ll be competing on four fronts this season, the squad could do with all the depth they have available.
Gomez will have at least eight games worth of pre-season to prove his mettle as the Reds take on Tranmere and Wigan domestically, before trips to Hong Kong, Germany and a date with Spanish side Bilbao in Ireland.
