Jürgen Klopp is reportedly willing to part with £40m to try and ensure that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain snubs a new contract offered by the Gunners.
After a week of seemingly endless embarrassments in the transfer market that saw the Reds apologise for ‘tapping up Virgil Van Dijk‘ and seemingly priced out of a move for Mohamed Salah, Jürgen Klopp is said to be desperate to make a statement. That statement? One last bid for Arsenal midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
The Express claim that Arsenal are willing to offer the player a “bumper rise,” as contract negotiations rumble on but that Klopp is not about to be scared off by the London club’s valuation of the player.
Despite ending last season playing – and admittedly impressing – as a right wing back, Oxlade-Chamberlain has openly revealed his preference for playing in a central midfield position on more than one occasion.
Speaking to BT Sport after Arsenal’s FA Cup final win over Chelsea, the player even went as far as to admit his hopes to emulate Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard: “the centre-mid role… I’ve always wanted to be Steven Gerrard, so I’ve still got a hope of that!”

With a deal for Naby Keita looking uncertain due to RB Leipzig’s unwillingness to part with any of their first-team squad this summer, Klopp could well look to get a deal for Oxlade-Chamberlain over the line as quickly as possible.
Although the Englishman prefers the central midfield position, he is also more than capable of doing a job out wide and he initially made his name at Arsenal predominantly on the right flank. This ability to fill two roles would do wonders for Klopp’s squad depth going into what is sure to be a seriously busy campaign. However, his injury record certainly doesn’t fill me with confidence.
Let us know what you think down below, would you be happy if Liverpool signed Oxlade-Chamberlain from Arsenal for £40m?
