According to reports, Liverpool are expected to contact Napoli with regards to striking a deal for left-back Faouzi Ghoulam.
Liverpool are in dire need of a left-back with James Milner the go-to man for the Reds in that department at the moment.
As per Gianluca Di Marzio, Liverpool are looking at signing Napoli’s Faouzi Ghoulam who ended the 2016/17 season in very impressive form and is rated as one of Europe’s best attacking defenders.
That being said, Liverpool need a left-back more in Nathaniel Clyne’s mould, defensively solid whose attacking contributions come as a bonus. Such has been the defensive situation on Merseyside for the last 10 years that Liverpool need to focus on shoring up the defence before signing an attack-minded fullback.
Besides, we have that in Alberto Moreno.
With reference to Faouzi Ghoulam, Di Marzio claims that “there are new contacts expected with the agent of the Algerian.”
According to Whoscored.com, while Ghoulam may have provided nine assists in all competitions last season, the fullback managed just one tackle per 90 minutes. He also only made 1.7 clearances per 90 minutes and just the one interception. For comparison, Nathaniel Clyne, in the Premier League, made 2.2 tackles and had similar stats for clearances and interceptions.
To be frank, however, failing to make more than one tackle per game on average is not good enough. For instance, if Liverpool were to buy him for around £25 million (ballpark figure), the Reds would be paying £625,000 per tackle he makes in a season.
At the end of the day, Ghoulam isn’t what Liverpool are looking for from a defensive point of view.
