Matthew Harris explains that Jürgen Klopp needs to sign a new goalkeeper this summer with Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius failing to impress at points during the 2016/17 season.
The Premier League season is now over and Liverpool have achieved what they set out to achieve back in August: Champions League football will return to Anfield.
Now, attention must turn immediately to the transfer window and one area of particular interest will be in goal – Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius both failed to inspire confidence earlier this year and Klopp may consider moving for a replacement this summer as they look to become one of the stronger contenders for the 2017/18 Premier League title.
A viable option. The former Manchester City shot-stopper has the experience and quality to shine on the big stage for Liverpool and Klopp should seriously consider moving for the 30-year-old before another major European club does.
According to reports at the start of 2017, City are interested in re-signing Hart but a transfer to a different top flight club may appeal to the England star. He has shown glimpses of his best form for Torino this season and that might be enough to convince Klopp to make a move.
Hart might not solve all of Liverpool’s goalkeeping issues but his reliability and consistency between the posts should help the Reds on big European nights.
Give Loris Karius another chance
Look at how David de Gea has turned out. When he joined Manchester United, the young Spaniard made mistake after mistake but he has now matured into one of the best shot-stoppers on the planet.
Karius, who was widely regarded as the second best goalkeeper in the Bundesliga before moving to Liverpool, has the potential to follow suit and Klopp can get the most out of his 23-year-old compatriot in the long term.
A show of faith can go a long way in football and the Liverpool boss will be desperate to get Karius back to his brilliant best ahead of what could be a memorable campaign.
The Real Betis goalkeeper isn’t a household name in European football but he is a decent shot-stopper and Liverpool need consistency right now. At 29 years of age, he is in the prime of his career and Klopp has reportedly taken a liking to his style and ability.
Adan, who started out at Real Madrid as a youngster, has been an ever-present for Betis since joining in 2014 and he has a release clause of just under £7 million. If Liverpool want a solid replacement at a low cut price, Adan is the man.
If truth be told, most supporters would probably prefer Hart but Adan has the talent to star for Liverpool. He is certainly an upgrade on both Mignolet and Karius.
It is going to be all change for Southampton this season. With newspapers claiming that Claude Puel is set to leave, a number of high-profile stars could also be on the move and Liverpool should enquire about England goalkeeper Fraser Forster.
The Saints star has been phenomenal since moving to the South coast but the opportunity to play in the Champions League could tempt him to venture back up north to Anfield. If he is available for the right price, Klopp could consider another Southampton raid.
Forster hasn’t had the best of seasons but he is capable of churning out solid and calm performances and that is what makes him a serious option for Liverpool.
The pick of the bunch: With Sunderland dropping into the second tier of English football, Pickford is available and the Reds should go all out to secure his signature ahead of their top-flight rivals.
With rumours suggesting that Arsenal and Everton are also interested in the 23-year-old, the time for Klopp to act is now. Pickford will push his peers close for a spot in the ‘Team of the Year’ and Liverpool know that he is almost too good to miss out on.
A future England number one, Pickford’s potential has no boundaries. It may take a hefty sum of money to fend off interest but he is definitely worth it.
