Manchester United and Liverpool are set to go head to head for out-of-favour Atletico Madrid defender Jose Gimenez this summer.
Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool are currently in fourth in the Premier League and are in with a shout of qualifying for next season’s Champions League.
This has seen the manager scout for a number of top class targets recently and one player that is now linked with a move to Liverpool is Atletico Madrid defender Jose Gimenez.
Considered as one of the most effective centre-backs in Europe at the moment, the 22-year-old has fallen out of favour at the Vicente Calderon this season and is looking to manufacture an exit in the summer.
Diego Simeone has not used him regularly in the first team which has seen him make just 19 appearances in all competition this season and this might see the manager put him up for sale this summer.
The youngster has a £38 million release clause in his contract but neither of the Premier League clubs might have to reach that price to lure him away.
Gimenez will enter the final year of his contract next season and if Atletico Madrid are to make some money from his sale, they will have to sell him this summer and at a price less than his release clause.
Manchester United and Jose Mourinho have been looking at some of the biggest names in Europe and have Gimenez on their list while Liverpool, who are also desperate for defensive additions want the Atleti man to partner Matip at the back next season.
It has been revealed that both teams have already met with the representatives of the player and have registered their interest in signing the player this summer.
The Spanish side are not planning to offer him a new contract and are ready to listen to offers this summer which might see both Liverpool and Manchester United set off on a bidding war in the transfer window.
