Liverpool are stepping up their summer business as they have now opened talks with one of the best players in the Premier League and have begun the process of trying to sign Virgil Van Dijk.

The Reds are the top goal scorers in the Premier League this season but their frailties at the other end of the field might end up costing them a lot come May.

They have a decent chance of qualifying for the Champions League next season and Jürgen Klopp is already looking at potential replacements for him this summer.

Of the many stars that are constantly linked with a move to Anfield, Liverpool fans are most excited with the club’s intent to buy Southampton star Virgil van Dijk.

The Dutch international joined the English club at the start of the previous season but already stands as one of the best defenders in the Premier League this season.

He was linked with an exit even in the summer and also in the January transfer window but the Saints managed to keep hold of him until the end of the season.

However, Liverpool are growing desperate for his signature and have now taken the first step towards it.

According to reports from news outlet Football Whispers, Liverpool have approached the player’s agent and have opened talks ahead of a move in the summer.

The likes of Dejan Lovren, Ragnar Klavan, and Lucas Leiva have all partnered Jöel Matip at the back this season for Liverpool and Van Dijk is expected to be the first choice partner for the Cameroon defender at the start of the next season.

Manchester City, Chelsea, Manchester United, and Everton have all been scouting the star but Liverpool are confident that they can land him this summer.

Though the initial price was reported to be close to £50 million, it is now understood that the Reds can get their man for around £40 million which will be an incredible swoop.

Though they face stiff competition for the player, their relationship with Van Dijk’s agency, who also take care of Divock Origi, Jordan Henderson, and Nathaniel Clyne already at the club might be what can lure Van Dijk to Anfield.
