Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp was desperate for German star Julian Draxler and almost signed him in January.
The Reds were hit by the injury of Philippe Coutinho at the turn of the year and with Sadio Mané busy at the AFCON, Liverpool were looking to spend on attacking talent at the start of the year.
A number of players were linked with a move to Anfield in January and one link that frustrated many Liverpool fans was PSG star Julian Draxler.
The 23-year old who was playing for Wolfsburg at the start of the season was linked with a move to a number of Premier League clubs including Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool but the German outfit managed to keep hold of him for another year.
But it was cut short when the playmaker revealed that he did not want to play for the club anymore this season.
Wolfsburg had to entertain bids in January and Draxler completed a switch to French giants PSG, where he has settled well at the club.
His price of just £30 million was something Liverpool were also interested in paying and respected journalist James Pearce said that Klopp was close to landing him in the transfer window.
Speaking in an exclusive with the Anfield Nation, the Echo’s journalist revealed that the German manager met the 23-year-old in the transfer window for a potential move and that Liverpool were ready to meet his asking price.
Pearce was asked, “In terms of spending in January, many fans sit on the fence in terms of whether or not they believe Klopp was refusing to spend in January/didn’t feel the need to spend or whether or not FSG would fund Klopp the money to sign the players that he wanted, in specific, Draxler; was that due to wages or the fact that he simply wanted to play for PSG instead of Liverpool?”
He replied: “I can only report things how I see it and Klopp was absolutely adamant – both with the microphones on and off – that he had been backed by the owners and that the money was there to spend in January. He just couldn’t get the targets he wanted.”
He went on to reveal that PSG’s place in the Champions League and the financial benefits at the Parc de Princes pushed the player to France rather than England.
“Klopp met Draxler but the player opted to sign for PSG instead. Yes, I think the huge wages on offer from PSG was part of it but also at the time they were still in the Champions League.”
Though this news will frustrate the Liverpool fans even more, surely the ambition of the manager is bound to get them excited for the next transfer window.
