Many Liverpool fans will be concerned with the fact they may have to endure another season of conceding too many goals. Jürgen Klopp has reassured fans that he is happy with his two goalkeepers and Chris Best will now look at this decision in more detail.
With 215 appearances at the club and just 68 clean sheets, the statistics do not weigh heavily in the number one choice goalkeeper’s favour at Liverpool. Simon Mignolet has had some great moments at Liverpool in terms of his saves from open play. However, there have been question marks surrounding his physical ability with set pieces and his dominance in the box.
It is because of these reasons that many fans are not happy with the Belgian goalkeeper anymore. The Premier League demands strong, tall and dominant goalkeepers (i.e. De Gea, Courtois, Lloris) who make their presence known. A club of Liverpool’s stature requires a goalkeeper who “ticks all the boxes” in terms of quality and it is of great concern that Mignolet does not seem to be the complete package.
Loris Karius was brought in with the intention of replacing Simon Mignolet at some point in time. With only 10 appearances and three clean sheets this season, he has hardly fit the description of being the ideal replacement for Simon Mignolet.
Jürgen Klopp had signed the German goalkeeper on the back of an impressive season with FC Mainz, in the hope his form would continue. However, it seems that the Premier League has proved too much for Karius as he struggles to set in at the Merseyside club. With too many mediocre saves, moments that have the fans gasping with relief, and no real presence in front of goal, Karius still has question marks surrounding his signing.
Both goalkeepers do not look settled in front of goal. Jürgen Klopp’s decision to tell the press he is “happy” with his two goalkeepers may have just been a reassuring one. Although, there will come a time where Klopp needs to look at other options.
