Damon Savenelli brings you the latest contract news from Melwood training ground.
It has been a busy couple of days for Liverpool Football Club. A big EFL Cup semi-final tie versus Southampton awaits the Reds tonight. But before we get to that there has been a lot of news circulating about the contracts of several Liverpool players.
Firstly, both Adam Lallana and Dejan Lovren are set to be handed new deals. Both players are tied down to Liverpool until 2019 on each of their respective contracts.
With seven goals and seven assists, Adam Lallana has arguably been Liverpool’s best player this season. The Englishman has flourished under the guidance of Jürgen Klopp and has been in stellar form for both club as well as country. Furthermore, the midfielder has attracted interest from French giants PSG. This contract will hopefully help fend off interest from Paris as well as any other clubs that show interest in the midfielder.
On the other hand, Dejan Lovren will also be given a new deal. The central defender has pretty much cemented his spot in the starting 11 as Klopp seems to favour the Matip-Lovren partnership. Liverpool are yet to lose a single game with those two playing alongside each other in defence. Although he has drawn heavy criticism in the past, Lovren remains a vital part of Liverpool’s defence at the moment and it looks like he will stay at Liverpool for years to come.
Perhaps the most exciting news is the fact that Philippe Coutinho has signed a new contract with the club. The new contract will mean that the Brazilian star is the club’s highest-paid player. The magician has reportedly been attracting interest from PSG, Bayern Munich, and Barcelona over the past few months. Barcelona are even said to be mounting a bid in the region of £60 million. This will without a doubt be giving LFC fans a flashback to when Luis Suarez left LFC for Barcelona back in 2014.
Coutinho has accepted this new deal which is without a doubt a sigh of relief for Liverpool. Klopp, as well as everyone at Liverpool, know important Coutinho is and how vital it is that he stay.
And finally, Liverpool midfielder Emre Can seems to have hit some turbulence during his contract talks.
Currently in a bad run of form, the German reportedly believes that he is worth more than what the club is offering. Now there are mixed emotions about this situation amongst Liverpool supporters. Some believe he should be sold due to this dispute.
Due to his bad run of form, most supporters seem to forget that Can is a solid midfielder. Last season, he was one of Liverpool’s best players. Still only 23, the German possesses loads of potential and some even believe that he is the future of Germany’s midfield.
I highly doubt that Can will be sold. Klopp is smart enough to realise that Can is too young and too good to be sold over one little contract dispute. If he were to be sold over this I would be extremely shocked, as well as disappointed.
