Liverpool are reportedly ready to sign Jacob Murphy and loan him back to Norwich City in a bid to beat Spurs to his signature.
Who? That’s right, Liverpool have been linked with 21-year-old Norwich City winger, Jacob Murphy. It is understandable if you have never heard of him, considering the fact that he only made his professional debut about three years ago.
Here is a little rundown of Murphy’s young career: The Englishman has been with Norwich since 2006, and has had numerous loan spells including stints with Blackpool, Southend United, Swindon Town, and Coventry City amongst others. He has also been called up to the England U18s, U19, and U20s. His last loan spell, which was last season, took place at Coventry City and saw the winger bag nine goals in 40 appearances. This allowed Murphy to cement his pace in the senior squad this season.
Murphy has certainly taken advantage of his run in the senior squad. With six goals and five assists in 20 appearances, he has been creating quite a ruckus down in the Championship. For a Norwich side that is currently down in ninth, these are some pretty good numbers.
Murphy’s solid performances have seen him attract interest from the likes of Liverpool, Everton, and Tottenham Hotspur. The Mirror, among other sources, are reporting that Liverpool will look to buy the winger, then loan him back to the Canaries. Similar to how the Reds handled the Marko Grujic deal. The Serbian was purchased in January from Red Star Belgrade but was then loaned back to the Serbian giants for the rest of the season.
If that is the case, then this rumour does not make much sense. Liverpool are looking for an immediate replacement after the departure of Sadio Mane to the AFCON. The Senegalese winger departed on Tuesday and will miss a handful of very important fixtures.
Without a doubt one of Liverpool’s best attacking threats, Mane signed for the Reds back in the summer for a hefty fee. He has without a doubt proven his worth with nine goals and four assists in 19 appearances. He not only provides goals, but his electric pace adds a different kind of threat to Liverpool’s attack. Mane’s pace is also vital in deploying Klopp’s famous gegenpress.
The Reds will undoubtedly need someone to come in and attempt to fill the void for the next month or so. The likes of Quincy Promes, Gabriel Barbosa, Christian Pulisic and Jese Rodriguez have all been linked.
Murphy would be a good player to bring in and develop considering the fact that he possesses loads of potential. If Liverpool were to loan him back to Norwich that would not really fill the void that Mane has left. I do think he would be a good singing in the future, but for now I believe Liverpool should look to bring in an experienced and proven winger.
With no figure yet quoted for Jacob Murphy, it will be interesting to see if Liverpool continue to pursue the young Englishman. There have been plenty of rumours flying about, so it will undoubtedly be an interesting transfer window for Liverpool, as well as the entire footballing world.
