It’s been a major talking point ever since the summer: will Philippe Coutinho remain a Liverpool player beyond this season?

In many people’s eyes, the Brazilian has established himself as the club’s best player, whilst easily becoming one of the Premier League’s best attacking midfielders. Coutinho’s in-game intelligence, quick movement and ferocious technical ability, amongst others, have become key attributes that Liverpool have relied upon to make them one of the league’s dangerous attacking sides.

However, whilst English top flight sides have suffered from Coutinho’s brilliance, some of Europe’s top sides have been watching and have surely liked what they’ve seen.

One of those sides is Paris Saint-Germain. The French club have reportedly been keeping an eye on Coutinho ever since the summer and although rumours linking them with a huge bid for the Brazilian could’ve been easily believed then, they can certainly be ruled out as nonsense today.

According to The Express, PSG are preparing a £40 million bid for the Liverpool star, who is, in writer Tony Banks’ words “unsettled”.

Such a report can easily send Reds fans into hysterical mode again, however, to reiterate the aforementioned point, it can certainly be ruled out as nonsense. That is because the Ligue 1 club have already signed their big star in Julian Draxler, who is set to join them in January from German club Wolfsburg.

When you compare some of Coutinho’s best qualities as a midfielder to those of Draxler (pace, technical nous and an ability to play anywhere across the frontline) it is clear to see that PSG’s wish to add them to their squad has already been fulfilled by the purchase of the German starlet, making continuing the pursuit of Coutinho all but pointless.

Add to that the fact that Unai Emery’s squad is already littered with multiple attacking options – with the likes of Angel Di Maria, Hatem Ben Arfa, Jesé Rodriguez and Lucas Moura all capable options – and even Coutinho himself would be questioned for making the switch to Paris.

All in all, it must be said that whether the Brazilian will remain a Liverpool player for the long-term remains to be seen but for now, talks of him being “unsettled” as well as PSG targeting him can very well be chucked in the rubbish bin.
