Jonathan Davies explains who you should keep an eye on in tonight’s Merseyside Derby and why.

Tonight will be the 227th Merseyside derby. There have been 26 red cards, 89 Liverpool wins and countless fights but each time Liverpool and Everton meet, the slate is wiped clean and city bragging rights are up for grabs once again.

Both sides will go into the game with confidence after winning midweek. Although Liverpool beat lowly Middlesbrough 3-0, Everton did extremely well to comeback against Arsenal and win 2-1. The Blues will be very confident heading into the game but will be well aware of the threat that Liverpool presents.

Liverpool are third on the league table with a game in hand. Having scored 40 goals already in the Premier League, Ronald Koeman will be trying to make sure his players stay awake and ensure that Liverpool don’t run riot like they did last season when Roberto Martinez was in charge.

Liverpool will make the short trip to their Merseyside rivals Everton tonight in a festive fixture that is a must win for both teams. With Chelsea beating Palace 1-0 at Selhurst Park and Manchester United picking up all three points at the Hawthorns, it is vital that Liverpool leave Goodison Park with all the points.

Liverpool must win to stay in touch with Chelsea at the top of the table but if they lose, they will be nine points behind the leaders. Also, with Manchester City winning against Arsenal it means that the Gunners dropped points and that the Reds can go two ahead of City, something Liverpool must take advantage of.

So, without further ado, here are three players to watch in the Merseyside derby.
