Steven Gerrard’s legend status at Liverpool is already secure, but his latest admission shows that passion for the club that made him still burns as hot as ever.

Gerrard left Anfield in 2015 before joining LA Galaxy, eventually retiring in 2016. Since then, he has moved into management and punditry, but nothing has truly replaced what he felt when leading Liverpool out as captain.

For Gerrard, it was never just a job. Since hanging up his boots, there is one thought that still pops into his head every single day.

Steven Gerrard says missing Liverpool every day is the ‘worst feeling’

Footballers retire from the game a lot earlier than people in most other professions.

That is why so many turn to sports media and coaching. Gerrard has done both, but he still sorely misses his time as Liverpool’s leader.

Speaking to BKM Radio, he said: “Retiring from what you love doing is the worst feeling. It’s like a sinking feeling in your stomach. When I left Liverpool Football Club, I miss playing and representing a team and leading a team every single day. I think about it every single day.

“Unfortunately, no one’s created something in the world now where you can change from going from 45 back to 18 because if you did I’d go and live it every single day again.

“I’d go and do the journey and start it again because I loved every minute of it. But unfortunately, we have to age.”

That loyalty and commitment is a far cry from how a certain modern-day Scouser appeared to feel about his boyhood club. Although by his own admission, Gerrard would love Trent Alexander-Arnold at Liverpool again one day.

The kind of love and dedication Gerrard had is rare. Playing for Liverpool was not simply his job — it was his purpose.

He still feels just as strongly now, and would probably give anything to go back to the start of his legendary Anfield career.
