Jermaine Pennant gives his verdict on Jarrod Bowen potentially joining Liverpool from West Ham

Jarrod Bowen is on Liverpool’s radar for a summer move as they look to fill the void Mohamed Salah is leaving behind.

Liverpool are assessing several forward options ahead of the window, and Bowen is a somewhat similar profile to Salah. He is left-footed, plays from the right, carries a goal threat and already knows the Premier League inside out.

West Ham’s likely relegation would only give the move extra appeal, with a player of Bowen’s level unlikely to stay in the Championship.

Former Liverpool winger Jermaine Pennant has now discussed the links, and why he thinks this would be smart business.

Jermaine Pennant explains why Jarrod Bowen would be a good addition for Liverpool

Despite playing in a struggling side, Bowen rarely lets his own levels drop.

This season has been dismal for West Ham, who are facing relegation for the first time since 2011. A player of Bowen’s quality will not be going with them if that happens.

Pennant thinks Liverpool would be a solid choice for the 29-year-old.

He said on talkSPORT: “I think he could do a good job because he plays out there. That’s his position. He’s doing well. He does well. He’s a talisman for West Ham, a team that’s struggling. So I think that would be a good signing.

“I think Liverpool were linked with him a good four years ago as well. He’s quick, he’s aggressive, he’s direct, which we like. He can get past players, go either way, byline, cut inside.

“So for me, it would be a good addition to the squad.”

Bowen is not the superstar talent who is going to fill Salah’s boots. There are only a handful of players in world football who could do that.

What he can do is come in straight away and contribute. He scores goals, presses honestly, and gives Liverpool a reliable senior option on the right.

He is not the typical age profile Liverpool usually chase, but that may not be a bad thing this summer. Salah and Andy Robertson are confirmed to be leaving, while Liverpool are now expecting Alisson Becker to go too. That is a lot of experience walking out of the dressing room.

Bowen is not the world-beater many fans want, but there are likely to be multiple attacking additions. If this deal can be done at a reasonable price for a player still at the back end of his prime, Pennant’s verdict is easy to agree with.
