Luis Suarez is delighted that Uruguay teammate Darwin Nunez has started to find his feet at Liverpool.
Nunez heads into the World Cup in excellent form for the Reds, scoring seven goals in his last ten games. And speaking to The Mirror, Suarez said he always knew his countryman would come good.
“Nunez is now playing for Liverpool like I knew he would,” said the former Liverpool striker. “He has exploded – and I am sure there will be many goals and trophies for him there.
Suarez also explained that he is in close contact with Nunez, as he tries to guide him on life at Anfield
“I speak with him regularly. I want him to help him, for him to learn from my mistakes,” explained the 35-year-old.
Suarez angling for Nunez Anfield link-up?
Suarez has been quite vocal about Nunez since his arrival at Liverpool. You do have to wonder whether the veteran is still trying to get back into Reds fans good books.
He upset a big portion of his former supporters by celebrating vociferously against them when scoring for Barcelona in 2019.
Perhaps his guiding of Nunez is a way to show that he’s still a Red at heart after all.
Or, maybe it’s even more than that. It mustn’t be forgotten that Suarez will be a free agent once again in January. Maybe his comments are some not-so-subtle hints to the Anfield recruitment team that he could be useful to have around.
That seems unlikely, but not necessarily impossible. Heading to the World Cup as his country’s main man once again, he clearly still has something to offer.
Realistically though, that’s never going to happen. Suarez is the past, and Nunez is very much the present and future.
His form has been one of the most pleasing things about this season for Liverpool. With results nowhere near as consistent as in previous years, Darwin is at least showing promise that the good times may not be all that far away.
Suarez’s hopes of one last hurrah with his country are definitely enhanced by having the former Benfica man onboard. With a notable former and current striker in their squad, Liverpool fans will be rooting for Uruguay to cause an upset.
