Report: What Darwin Nunez was spotted doing on the Liverpool bench during last night's match with Ajax

Darwin Nunez was spotted looking a little disinterested whilst a substitute for Liverpool’s game against Ajax last night.

Nunez was on the bench for a second game in a row in the Champions League. And according to The Daily Mail, the striker ‘often stared blankly at the pitch’ from his seat behind Jurgen Klopp.

This changed at half-time, where he reportedly took part in a rondo with James Milner and Fabio Carvalho.

Nunez was then introduced into the action with 25 minutes left to play. Although he didn’t manage a goal, and missed a pretty presentable chance, he looked lively in his brief cameo.

Nunez still waiting to catch fire

Darwin has had to be patient during his short stay at Liverpool so far. As he’s done with players in the past, Jurgen Klopp has chosen to slowly ease the 23-year-old in.

In a way, it’s an understandable position from Klopp. The team aren’t playing particualrly well at the moment and it’s maybe a good idea to separate Nunez a little from that.

The Uruguayan is a long-term project after all. No need to empty his confidence by sticking him up-front in a misfiring team.

With Diogo Jota now healthy, Liverpool also have other, more experienced options.

On the flip side, Nunez’s confidence may also take a hit from not being in the side. Given his big price tag, his performances, no matter how brief, will come under scrutiny.

Being introduced late on in games isn’t giving him enough time to make a proper impact. It also means that he’s struggling to find the rhythm needed to come to terms with what Klopp wants from him.

As a result, it would be nice to see Darwin start a couple of games after the international break. He may not be the finished article, but he has a good ability of unsettling defenders.

Now that Liverpool look like they may have steadied the ship, it feels like the time to give Nunez a little run. Let him show what he can do.
