'In the last few years': Julian Alvarez now makes claim about Liverpool after scoring against them on Saturday

Julian Alvarez has spoken about Liverpool after scoring against them in Saturday’s Community Shield showdown.

Speaking to mancity.com, Alvarez praised Liverpool’s performance over recent seasons.

“Liverpool have shown in the last few years how good they are,” said the 22-year-old. “They’re a great team with great players, so is Manchester City. So it was a good test to start the season.”

The Argentinian showed exactly why City were so keen to sign him with a debut goal at the King Power Stadium. While all the focus was on Erling Haaland, it was Alvarez who made his mark against Liverpool.

Another mammoth battle lies in wait for Liverpool

Thanks to Haaland, Alvarez’s signing at City has gone a little under the radar. Where last season they didn’t really have an out-and-out striker, they now have two.

That, amongst a plethora of other things, will make them more dangerous than ever heading into the new season.

Liverpool showed on Saturday that they’re every bit as dangerous, though. The Reds matched Pep Guardiola’s side on every level.

Although in truth the game could have gone either way, Liverpool proved their credentials by sealing a 3-1 win.

It could of course mean nothing in the long-run. City also lost the Community Shield to Leicester City last season, and went on to win the title. In 2019, they beat Liverpool at Wembley only to lose out to The Reds in the title race.

What the result does do though, is send a reminder that Liverpool are more than capable of going toe-to-toe with City.

At times over the last few years, Liverpool have often felt like the underdog when facing the Champions. Not anymore, though. Any game between the two could genuinely go either way.

This day belonged to Liverpool. The two Premier League games on October 16th and April 1st already have great big red rings around them. Whoever edges those two fixtures is surely likely to lift the Premier League title.
