Jurgen Klopp appears to have called Liverpool academy goalkeeper Liam Hughes into his squad for today’s friendly with RB Leipzig.
As seen on the Liverpool FC official Twitter page, Hughes could be seen boarding the Liverpool plane this morning.
Mohamed Salah, Kostas Tsimikas, Adrian and Tyler Morton joined the 20-year-old in crossing the tarmac towards the flight.
Without Alisson Becker and Caoimhin Kelleher, Klopp’s options are a little thin on the ground heading to Germany.
Liverpool looking light between the posts
It’s unlikely that Hughes will see any game time against Leipzig, but it’s still a special moment for the youngster.
According to liverpoofc.com, Hughes is a Northern Irish goalkeeper, just like Kelleher. He joined from Celtic in January 2021, and spent the second-half of last season at non-league Stalybridge Celtic.
Now travelling alongside the likes of Salah, it’s a big jump up for the young ‘keeper.
It’s likely that he’ll be one of four goalkeepers in the Liverpool squad. With worry over Alisson and Kelleher, Klopp will have to count on Adrian as his first-choice against Leipzig.
Harvey Davies and Fabian Mrozek both played some minutes in Asia as a result of the two injuries, and they’ll likely be joining Hughes and Adrian.
It isn’t ideal preparation for Liverpool as the Community Shield, and the start of the season, speed into view.
But what an experience for young Hughes. That’s what pre-season is all about. You never know unless you’re given a chance. There may not be much chance to make an impression on the pitch, but if he can make a good one whilst being in and around the squad, Klopp won’t forget him.
