'Not at all': Jurgen Klopp shares which Liverpool star he absolutely doesn't want Darwin Nunez to play like

Darwin Nunez’s playing style for Liverpool will be nothing like Roberto Firmino, says Jurgen Klopp.

In quotes from The Mirror, the Liverpool boss has questioned why he should ask Nunez to play like Firmino when they’re completely different players.

“Do I want that Darwin plays like Bobby Firmino in the same position? No, not at all, it makes no sense,” said Klopp.

“We are talking about a false nine and a nine. That is the difference. We had two or three or four years where it was always clear before the pre-season we start up front with Sadio, Bobby and Mo. Now the door is open for pretty much everybody. That is what we have to use.”

Liverpool change-up their style

Klopp’s words are interesting, as it pretty much confirms that he’s looking to set Liverpool up in a completely new way.

It’s worth pointing out that Firmino hasn’t been a fixture in the Liverpool side for the best part of 18 months now. However, when operating without him, Diogo Jota or Sadio Mane have often tried to mirror his movements.

That is, coming deep off the ball and allowing the two wide players to drift into central spaces further forward.

With Nunez now in the ranks, it seems as though Klopp is looking to ask for something completely different. Darwin looks to be more of a ‘Torres’ type forward who willingly runs the channels with pace.

As Liverpool still posses wide forwards who like to drift inside, it will be interesting to see how those roles evolve.

Arguably, there are few better in this position in world football than Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian has made going from outside to in a devastating artform.

Firmino’s skillset allowed Salah to do this and become one of the most prolific goal-scorers in Liverpool’s history. Bobby may not get the goals, but he’s been absolutely crucial for Liverpool. As Klopp points out, Nunez’s attributes are different.

But Liverpool have consciously decided to go down this route, which suggests Klopp has a trick up his sleeve. Whether that’ll be a formation change or a reshuffling of personnel, we’ll just have to wait and see.
