£33m reported Liverpool target wins league's Player of the Year award, Reds have already held talks

Reported Liverpool target Cody Gakpo wins an Eredivisie award for his efforts this season. The winger is making waves right now.

PSV Eindhoven captain Cody Gakpo won the Eredivisie’s Footballer of the Year award this week after an incredible season with the club. The 23-year-old helped his club to a second-place finish, just two points behind Ajax and individually, he couldn’t have done much more in the title race.

Primarily playing from the left-wing, Gakpo scored 12 and assisted another 13 in the league. Those figures were good enough for 10th and 2nd overall, respectively, and the wingers overall stats were simply outstanding.

Three shots per game, three dribbles per game and 2.6 key passes – Gakpo has been an unstoppable creative force this season. He’s showing leadership, too, and at only 23, there’s massive potential in his game.

It’s potential that Liverpool reportedly see, too.

Both Eindhovens Dagblad and Voetbal International claim Liverpool have held early talks about Gakpo. Arsenal do lead the race, we should say, but the Reds appear to see a future star in the Dutchman.

It’s easy to see why, of course, given his incredible season and Liverpool do love a creative winger. Gakpo could be a long-term Sadio Mané successor and those Dutch reports suggest £33m could get him.

It does appear right now that Gakpo will remain with PSV for at least one more season, though. This could be one for 2023, which might actually suit Liverpool. Mané, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah are all out of contract next summer and one or two could very well leave.

Getting Gakpo in, after another year in which (hopefully) he improves further, could be fantastic business – even if that £33m price-tag rises.

We’ve written before that Gakpo could be a star signing-in-the-making if Liverpool want him. This season’s award just recognises how good he is – and how good he could become.
