Liverpool could be interested in signing 21-year-old Porto midfielder Fabio Vieira.
“If Klopp has already touched on Fabio’s name, as he has done with others, it’s because at Liverpool they are attentive to the younger ones,” said Vieria’s cousin, Mara Vieira.
She suggested that it could be a matter of time before the Porto man makes a move to a bigger club. However, there was also an acknowledgment that the player is happy for now.
“From there, it’s a matter of waiting, but it seems to me that he’s doing well at FC Porto, which is also a high-level club. There is no great anxiety to change, unless a great opportunity arises.”
Liverpool linked last summer
Liverpool were linked with a move for Vieira during last summer.
Portuguese publication CM Jornal claimed that the Porto man was ‘close to leaving’ during the transfer window. Liverpool and Wolverhampton Wanderers were named as the two clubs interested on that occasion.
However, much of Liverpool’s interest seemed to stem from the fact that Vieira’s contract was due to expire in the summer coming up.
Since then, the player has penned a new contract until 2025. According to Record that contract has a release clause of £43m.
That’s a relatively big fee for Liverpool. Although that won’t deter them if they are truly admirers of the player, it may just cool their interest slightly.
Masters of the Portuguese market
Sky journalist Melissa Reddy spoke earlier this week of how Liverpool have ‘heavily scouted’ Portugal for new signings (Sky Sports Football 7mins 42secs).
Jurgen Klopp has also spoken of how The Reds have a strong Spanish and Portuguese community when speaking to Peter Crouch on BT Sport (6mins 35secs).
It seems that Liverpool have identified the Portuguese league as being one that they can scour for talent.
After the success story that has been Luis Diaz’s January arrival, that is likely to have been further reinforced. The league isn’t one of the strongest around. But the amount of world-class talent to have passed through either Porto, Benfica or Sporting is staggering.
Vieira is obviously a talented player having won the Euro U-21 Player of the Tournament last summer. Liverpool scouts are usually on the money. If they have identified him as a good fit for Jurgen Klopp’s team, it won’t be the last we’ve heard of this.
