Talks ongoing over cancellation of AFCON which could hand Liverpool title boost

Breaking news indicates that CAF are in talks over the potential cancellation of the AFCON tournament set to take place in Cameroon next month.

A tweet from GFFN (Get French Football News) cites RMC as reporting that CAF is “currently undertaking discussions about the possible cancellation of next month’s AFCON in Cameroon.”

The tournament has been on the horizon for Liverpool and other clubs with African players for a long time, but it’s just around the corner now.

RMC Sport claims that the increase in COVID cases linked to the new and highly contagious variant Omicron is causing worry, and talks are underway over the ‘possible cancellation’ of next month’s tournament.

Liverpool fans react to AFCON news

The news that the tournament could be cancelled is a disappointing one for African football fans. However, for Liverpool supporters, it’s interesting news. Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Naby Keita are currently set to depart for the tournament at the end of the month.

They would be likely to miss all of January, including a massive trip to Stamford Bridge on January 2. But if the tournament is cancelled, Jurgen Klopp will not need to plan for life without his influential African stars and instead can include them in his plans.

Salah, in particular, would be a miss. The Egyptian has 21 goals and nine assists and it’s not even Christmas yet. So it’s understandable that Liverpool fans are desperate to see him stay at the club in January, as he has the potential to win silverware this season and break multiple individual records.
