Liverpool fans react to Ibrahima Konate keeping Zlatan Ibrahimovic in his pocket

It was a coming of age moment for Ibrahima Konate as he kept Zlatan Ibrahimovic, a dangerous attacking presence, quiet for 90 minutes.

The Swedish striker has six goals and three assists this season as AC Milan hunt the Serie A title, yet he was unable to get past Ibrahima Konate; one of the Reds best performers.

The French defender has blown hot and cold in his displays for the Reds this season. On one hand, he kept Cristiano Ronaldo quiet at Old Trafford in Liverpool’s historic 5-0 win. On the other hand, he has battled to contain the likes of Southampton’s Armando Broja and Porto’s Luis Diaz.

His performance at the San Siro feels significant. While it was a game that meant nothing for Liverpool, it was huge for AC Milan. Jurgen Klopp rotated his squad heavily, making eight changes from the side that narrowly beat Wolves at the weekend.

Konate dominated San Siro, the stats show

The Reds were outstanding in Italy. Konate was composed, strong and most importantly, he seemed to show signs of growing accustomed to Jurgen Klopp’s tactics.

According to WhoScored, he took 64 touches, played 87% of his passes accurately, won six aerial duels against Ibra, made two tackles, three interceptions and seven clearances.

DIVOCK ORIGI DOES NOT MAKE SENSE.

On paper, it sounds like a Martin Skrtel-esque display but it was far more refined than that. The Frenchman could still improve his passing out from the back but the signs are promising.

He joined Liverpool from RB Leipzig for £36million and is earning £71,000 per week. It’s clear that it will be some time before he is a guaranteed starter for the Reds but he definitely has the potential to be a great player for the club.

Joe Gomez was really good in his 26-minute cameo even if it was at right-back. He will once again challenge Konate for that final spot in Jurgen Klopp’s defence.

Joel Matip and Virgil van Dijk have been very good at the heart of defence and it seems unlikely that they will be broken up any time soon.

Liverpool fans hail the Frenchman after full-time

Liverpool fans were effusive in their praise for Ibou after the game.
