While they might be third right now, Liverpool are rapidly gaining the momentum required to blow past league leaders Chelsea.
A 4-1 win over Everton would be a standout result no matter the current circumstances surrounding the game. But Liverpool’s form over the last two weeks makes it even more impressive.
Going into the game, Everton were in shocking form and had just been booed off the pitch after a 1-0 loss to Brentford. Within 20 minutes, they were 2-0 down to a fantastic Jurgen Klopp side.
They peaked in the game when Demarai Gray equalized in the 38th minute and, while they displayed great fight and bravery to close down and press the Reds, that’s the very least the Gwladys Street End demands during a Merseyside Derby.
Liverpool ran out 4-1 victors and Gray’s strike turned out to be very little less than consolation, while the away side made it three from three and kept the pressure on Manchester City and Chelsea in what is turning out to be a thrilling Premier League title race.
I think Klopp’s Mentality Monsters should be favourites and here’s why.
It’s simple. Liverpool have the best attack and they are only getting better in defence.
Liverpool (43) have scored the most league goals in Europe’s top five leagues. While Chelsea (6) have conceded fewer than the Reds (12), if Klopp can keep his side from conceding low-quality chances as they have against West Ham and Brighton, they will have no trouble beating the smaller sides.
Going head-to-head with the biggest teams, there isn’t a side whose style of play is better suited to toppling the giants of the game.
The high pressing, coupled with the ruthless finishing, means there isn’t a team Liverpool are incapable of beating across two legs and in the league. As a result, Liverpool are fully capable of going on an incredible winning streak.
