Journalist claims Liverpool have 'substantial' transfer budget in place for January signings

According to alleged ‘transfer expert’ Duncan Castles, Liverpool have a ‘substantial budget in place’ that will be used if they can find the right player.

Liverpool are flying right now. 12 goals scored in their last three Premier League games and just one conceded is a pretty impressive record, but Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Naby Keita will head off for AFCON in January.

Their absence could cause the Reds’ form to fall off a cliff, with Salah particularly important to their attacking rhythm and efficiency.

The Egyptian has 19 goals and eight assists in all competitions this season and is leading Europe with his displays this season, so replacing him or finding suitable cover is obviously very challenging. But Michael Edwards has rarely failed in the transfer market.

According to Duncan Castles, who was speaking on the Transfer Window Pocast, Liverpool have substantial funds to invest into their next signing.

He said: “That’s the aim, they’re looking for a forward who can play across any of the front three positions, I’m told that there is a substantial budget in place if they can find the right player in the January window, which is not easy in normal circumstances.

“But you do have pandemic conditions as an assistance here and you have a lot of clubs in Europe who are open to bringing revenue in, so you may be able to do things you can’t do normally.”

Castles is a bit vague on the last point. However, due to the financial constraints placed on football clubs as a result of the pandemic, certain clubs might be prepared to accept adjusted payment schedules or allow for a greater portion of the fee to be amortized. That could make it easier for Liverpool to sign their next target.
