Tyler Morton can cover for Naby Keita after Porto show

After impressing on his Champions League debut, Tyler Morton should get more minutes in January to help cover for Naby Keita’s AFCON-enforced absence.

The Guinean is currently injured but he is set for a return to training. He is still expected to travel to Cameroon for the 2022 AFCON tournament and will be missing for up to a month.

After Boxing Day, his next Liverpool game could only arrive in February depending on how Guinea progress in the competition, so Jurgen Klopp will need to assess his midfield options.

Thiago, Fabinho, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Jordan Henderson and Curtis Jones should all be available unless injury strikes between now and New Year’s eve. But, even with those options, Tyler Morton could get game time.

He impressed in pre-season and further showcased his ability in the Carabao Cup before getting minutes in the Premier League from the bench. Yet his biggest achievement to date was shining in midfield alongside none other than Thiago.

The highest praise that I can give an 18-year-old Academy graduate is that he didn’t look out of place next to Thiago. Even after the Spaniard scored one of the best goals Anfield has ever seen, he still complemented the Liverpool no.6 with his energy, drive and composed presence on the ball.

January is going to be a really testing period for Jurgen Klopp to navigate. But having the youthful exuberance that Morton provides can only be helpful.

He is certainly not expected to start against the likes of Chelsea, who are set to welcome Liverpool to Stamford Bridge on January 2. But cameos from the bench against Brentford or Crystal Palace could further Morton’s early development.

Klopp said the 18-year-old did ‘exceptionally well’ when he faced Porto.
