Ralf Rangnick is a close friend of Jurgen Klopp’s and the Manchester United-linked manager told the Liverpool boss to sign two RB Leipzig players.
Sadly, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been sacked and the fun has come to an end as Manchester United begin the search for their next manager and Rangnick has been named as a possible target.
According to the Athletic, Rangnick is a ‘potential candidate’ with John Murtough, United’s football director, a ‘huge’ admirer of the former RB Leipzig coach.
He is a close friend of Klopp’s and several months ago it emerged that Rangnick told the Liverpool boss to sign both Ibrahima Konate and Dayot Upamecano.
Journalist Guido Schafer told the Liverpool Echo: “Liverpool were in contact for many months. Klopp asked Ralf Rangnick a couple of years ago: ‘who is the better player: Dayot Upamecano or Konate?
“Rangnick told Jurgen ‘When you are able to buy both, buy both’”.
As it turned out, the Reds missed out on their window to sign Upamecano as Bayern Munich snapped him up in January before he moved to the Allianz Arena in the summer.
This prompted Liverpool to get their act together and they worked on a deal to sign Konate. The Frenchman subsequently joined the club in May for £36million.
He has been limited to just four games this season but he has showcased the pace and power, which Liverpool were attracted to when they decided to trigger his release clause.
Konate is competing with Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip for a starting role as well as Joe Gomez, so he’s got his work cut out. Yet, at just 22, he also has great promise for the future.
What Klopp’s plans are for him remain to be seen. But Liverpool can rest assured that they will be able to cope with injuries to central defenders should they pile up again.
