Ibrahima Konate has only four appearances but Liverpool view him as 'one of the best'

Liverpool are not concerned about Ibrahima Konate, despite the new £36million centre-back only making four appearances this season.

When he arrived in the summer, he was hugely impressive in training clips as well as in the pre-season games he played. After being paired with Virgil van Dijk in some of the friendlies, it looked as though he would start the season in the starting line-up.

However, nobody counted on Joel Matip playing out of his skin and the Cameroonian has arguably outperformed his Dutch partner this season.

This has left Konate out in the cold somewhat and the Frenchman has only made four competitive appearances for his new club, but there is no cause for concern according to one report.

The Liverpool Echo reports that, while he has yet to make a starting berth his own, the player Michael Edwards signed for £36m from RB Leipzig is one the club’s coaching staff views as “one of the best young defenders on the continent.”

He has all the tools to succeed in the Premier League and the Echo says that “Liverpool believe his pace, strength and ability to play through opposition lines with his passing to be key assets for how Klopp and his staff want to play.”

He is contracted to the Reds until 2026, so there is no massive rush to get him into the starting XI. That means Konate can get to grips with the way Klopp plays, while van Dijk and Matip help Liverpool get the results needed to compete for major honours.

There is no question that Konate will be a starter at some point. It is only a matter of time until he gets an extended run in the side and, when that happens, he just has to take his chance to become a key player.
