Virgil van Dijk says Holland deserve safe passage to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar

The Netherlands left it late in their final game but goals from Steven Bergwijn and Memphis Depay were enough to beat Norway 2-0.

Van Dijk was typically imperious against the Norwegians and while he was required to snuff out danger on a few occasions, he wasn’t required to get out of second gear at any point.

The Dutch are now into the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and after missing out in 2018, this will be van Dijk’s first appearance at the finals.

After the game, van Dijk insisted that Holland deserved to win despite the win only being guaranteed late on.

He told reporters: “It was deserved. I don’t think we gave anything away, nothing at all,” insisted Van Dijk. “After Saturday, we were asked to respond and we did an excellent job. There is still a lot of room for improvement, but it was all about the result.

“These are the games you want to play, there was a lot of pressure. I can’t speak for everyone, but I was really looking forward to it.

“Of course, you don’t really want to be in a situation like that, but it was the way it was and I think we showed real character. It was not easy to switch on again after Montenegro, but we did it.”

Liverpool will be delighted that their colossus of a centre-back emerges from the latest international without an injury as a number of the Reds’ players have picked up knocks.

Jordan Henderson and Sadio Mane have returned to training despite minor complaints while Andy Robertson is a doubt to face Arsenal this weekend but Kostas Tsimikas can step in if needed.
