Rio Ferdinand waxes lyrical about Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk

Rio Ferdinand has waxed lyrical about Virgil van Dijk and says that the Dutchman is the best centre-back in the world, despite his form since tearing his ACL.

While Liverpool players dropped clangers all across the pitch against West Ham, van Dijk was one of a handful that actually covered himself in glory.

His block on Jarrod Bowen saved a goal after Trent Alexander-Arnold was taken out of the game by a ball over the top.

Then, when Michail Antonio was slipped through by Fornals, van Dijk was speedy as he turned on his jets to catch the Hammers forward, outmuscling him to regain possession for Liverpool.

Ferdinand – widely considered as one of the best Premier League defenders of all time – has praised van Dijk and, while he says he needs to continue at the highest level to be considered the GOAT, he says his best season stacks up against other legendary defenders.

“It’s who stands the length of time as well, if you could do it over a period of time,” Ferdinand told his FIVE YouTube channel while discussing Van DIjk’s legacy.

“There’s no doubt in my mind Virgil’s best year would stack up against most centre-backs, but you don’t get judged on that best year, you get judged over that period of time.

“I think you’ve got to think you’re the guy, you’ve got to think you’re the best… and I think Virgil, he’s the best centre-back in the world.

“Yes there’s going to be teething problems, that’s going to happen because he’s been out for so long and he’s just getting his feet wet again.

“But I still believe if there’s a game right now today and I need a centre-back, my first centre-back on the list would be him.”

Van Dijk, who earns £240,000 a week, has looked slower than before his injury. But he has shown in key moments this season that he’s still the best and is going to need time to rediscover his consistency.

When he does, Liverpool’s defensive issues could resolve themselves.
