Lionel Messi admission gives Liverpool encouragement in their Champions League glory hunt

Lionel Messi’s admission that the best team doesn’t always win the Champions League should give Liverpool encouragement after their win over Atletico Madrid.

For me, he is the greatest player of all time but that’s a conversation for another time and probably a different website. Yet he has admitted that Paris Saint-Germain might not win the Champions League this season.

As with any cup competition, luck can play a massive role, as can fans in the stadium, as Messi found out at Anfield when the Kop rocked Barcelona to their very core.

“I think it is my biggest target, and the club’s,” Messi told beIN Sports when talking about winning the Champions League with PSG.

“They [PSG] have been looking to win the Champions League and have been very close. We are one of the main candidates, but not the only one.

“Everyone is talking about PSG because of the players, but other clubs have been working together for years and have signed good players, like Manchester United, Man City, Bayern Munich, Liverpool, Atletico or Chelsea.

“There are plenty of clubs who can win the Champions League,” added Messi.

“It is a very difficult competition and not always the best team wins. You need a lot of things to win it, everything is possible.”

Liverpool are one of the best teams in the world but they don’t have the biggest squad, and the likes of PSG, Chelsea and Manchester City should currently be considered as favourites.

What Liverpool have is the best player in the world on current form in Mohamed Salah, several world-class players throughout the starting XI, the power of Anfield and perhaps their greatest asset, Jurgen Klopp.

The German is, in my opinion, the best manager in the world and, if he can guide the Reds to another European Cup, he will etch his name into the tournament’s folklore.

But as Messi says, the best team doesn’t always win the tournament, which gives Liverpool and other sides hope in their quest to beat the world’s richest clubs to the Champions League title this season.
