Video: Liverpool's Joel Matip reacts to being yellow carded in typical fashion

While most Liverpool fans will only remember Matip’s hilarious protests, the Cameroonian centre-back was world-class on his return from a minor injury.

After missing a handful of games in which Ibrahima Konate stepped in, the former Schalke star was back for Liverpool against Atletico Madrid and he helped the Reds to a clean sheet.

I would argue that Matip has actually been performing at a higher level than Virgil van Dijk this season. That is not a criticism of the Dutchman, rather a reflection of how well he has been performing.

It was hilarious when Matip protested that he’d not committed a foul on Mattheus Cunha because he knicked the ball before following through the Brazilian.

That funny moment aside, Matip was all business all night, as he helped his side progress to the knockout stages of the Champions League where Liverpool will now be considered one of the favourites to win the tournament.

With a fully fit side, there are only a handful of teams in the world that could stop Jurgen Klopp’s men from progressing to the final as they are virtually unmatched in two-legged European ties – last season aside.

If Liverpool can keep their players fit, Klopp has all the tools he needs to bring silverware to Anfield this summer.

It would be incredible to win the Champions League after the disappointment of last season.
