Joe Gomez reportedly absent from training but he cannot afford to suffer another major injury

Liverpool.com reports that Joe Gomez wasn’t spotted in training as the Reds prepare to face Atletico Madrid in the Champions League tonight.

The Englishman was ‘unexpectedly’ absent from the training session, but it’s unclear whether or not his absence is precautionary or, as Matt Addison wrote: “He could be doing work elsewhere.”

The good news is that Joel Matip, who has been battling with a minor injury, was in attendance as were Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate.

Gomez cannot afford to suffer another serious injury as he has already had four major setbacks in his Liverpool career, totalling 507 days on the sidelines and 139 missed games.

He is 24 now and I firmly believe that, without his injuries, he would be the second-best defender in the Premier League behind only Virgil van Dijk. Although the Dutchman has struggled for consistency this season, that was to be expected after his cruciate ligament injury.

Fortunately for Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool have incredible depth at centre-half this season after recruiting Ibrahima Konate in the summer. If Gomez is on the sidelines for any length of time, it won’t be as damaging as last season.

My Revenge On Ben Foster

Hopefully, there is no reason to be concerned. However, if he has picked up an injury, you have to worry about the future of his career as he hasn’t gone a single season so far without a setback of some sort.

It would be a pity if Gomez couldn’t overcome his injuries as he has such a high ceiling on his potential. But he is at risk of becoming the next Daniel Sturridge if Liverpool cannot find a way to help him stay fit.

He is 24 now and yet he’s only played 162 games in his entire career. Trent Alexander-Arnold, who is a year younger than him, has already played 208.

We need to wait to see if Gomez is indeed injured. But I’ve got my fingers crossed that he was doing some gym work or is ill as Liverpool will need him next month when the fixture list is more congested.
