Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has confirmed that he will be without four key players for his side’s visit to Anfield to face Liverpool in the Champions League on Wednesday evening.
Antoine Griezmann, who was red-carded for his dangerous challenge on Roberto Firmino, will miss the game through suspension and will be a major miss.
The Frenchman was a shadow of his former self at Barcelona, but he is back to his best with Atleti and his goal against Liverpool at the Wanda Metropolitano is evidence of this.
Stefan Savic is also suspended after collecting too many yellow cards and the Montenegrin is a key player for Simeone, with his bullish defending an integral part of Atletico’s backline.
Marcos Llorente, who scored against Liverpool in 2020 and subsequently named his dog Anfield, is injured and will miss the game. But Thomas Lemar will be the biggest miss after he ran rings around the Reds in the Spanish capital.
The Reds were heavily interested in signing the Frenchman before his move to Atleti and, while it has taken him a while, he’s finally fulfilling his potential and it’s clear why Jurgen Klopp was such a big fan of the former AS Monaco star.
Jurgen Klopp’s side has a massive chance to book their place in the knockout stages of the 2022 Champions League competition. After having to go to the final day of the group in recent years, it will be great to see Klopp have the freedom of playing a weaker side in the final two games.
Thiago and Fabinho were spotted in training on Monday and, after it was speculated if they would be in contention to face the La Liga side, Klopp has confirmed that the midfielders are in his thinking for tomorrow.
