Dayot Upamecano had an Instagram message for reported Liverpool target, Ibrahima Konate, after the RB Leipzig defender made his long-awaited return from injury.
Konate, 21, played the full 90 minutes for France’s U21s, who secured a vital 2-0 victory against Russia in the European Championships on Sunday.
It was the first match Konate has started this year following an ankle injury that has kept him on the sidelines for the best part of three months.
He marked his return to international football by taking to Instagram, where he received a response from his Leipzig counterpart, Upamecano.
His return also took place during a period when Konate has extensively been linked with a move to Anfield.
The RB Leipzig defender could be joining Upamecano in heading for the exit door this summer.
Bayern Munich have pounced for the highly-rated centre-back and Liverpool could be looking to follow suit with Upamecano’s defensive partner.
According to The Athletic, Liverpool are poised to meet Konate’s £34m release clause to get the deal over the line this summer.
Jurgen Klopp’s defensive options have been heavily tested this term with Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip all sustaining season-ending injuries this term.
And Konate, who is trying to focus on the current European tournament, admits he has been regularly contacted about a move.
Speaking with L’Equipe, he said : “I woke up, I saw my phone ringing all over the place. I just wanted to tell them, ‘Hey, I played yesterday, I’m tired, leave me alone.’
“Frankly, I don’t even watch this. We can’t focus on that, there are the Euros and then my return to the club.
“You have to focus on that and not on the external things.”
Leipzig have already prepared for Upamecano’s exit by acquiring Mohamed Simakan of Strasbourg, while the capture of Josko Gvardiol from Dinamo Zagreb back in September 2020 provides further should Konate depart, too.
