It’s fair to assume, that the last few months have been arguably the most difficult of Virgil van Dijk’s illustrious career.
Having ruptured his ACL back in October 2020, the 29-year-old has been forced to watch from the sidelines over a sustained period for the first time in his illustrious career.
Van Dijk has clocked up just six appearances in all competitions this season, and according to Jurgen Klopp and Frank de Boer, is unable to feature again for the remainder of the campaign.
It must be difficult, then, for Van Dijk to persistently see both his club and national teammates pictured in action, especially with this summer’s European Championships rapidly approaching.
Van Dijk has the chance to captain his country in an international tournament, after all, that’s something that should not be overlooked.

Still, whether or not he will be ready, however, remains to be seen.
Klopp and De Boer on Van Dijk
Klopp recently said he thinks it’s ‘unlikely’ that Van Dijk plays at the Euros.
“It is not my decision but to be honest, the information I have at the moment is that it will be unlikely,” said Klopp, per Sky Sports.
Luckily, Netherlands manager, De Boer, also echoed Klopp’s concerns heading into this summer’s tournament.
“Anything he can contribute to Liverpool and possibly us would be a bonus. I’m not counting on it right now,” he said, per the Athletic.
“But if it did happen, it would be fantastic for the national team.”
So, the latest development is that Van Dijk should be expected to rest up this summer and get himself back up to speed for 2021/22.
However, Liverpool supporters aren’t completely out of the woods just yet. De Boer has left the door open and will likely reevaluate the situation again come to the end of the season.
For now, though, Van Dijk will continue to focus solely on his recovery. The most he can do for his country at present is to offer and showcase his support off the field – something he was spotted doing on social media on Tuesday afternoon.
Van Dijk, who has clocked up 38 appearances for his national side, had a message for his Liverpool teammate, Georginio Wijnaldum, who was spotted putting in the hard yards while training with the Netherlands.
The 30-year-old will deputise as captain in Van Dijk’s absence, as Oranje make final preparations for their World Cup qualifying campaign, begins this week.
Wijnaldum and his team are scheduled to play Turkey, Latvia and Gibraltar.
