Liverpool have informed Real Madrid of their intentions to sign Raphael Varane in this summer’s transfer window, according to reports. The French-born defender is also a top Manchester United target, too.
This comes from the Spanish publication OkDiario. They say Liverpool are now in the frame to land the 2018 World Cup winner.
Varane, 27, has been one of Europe’s top recognised centre-backs over the previous decade, ever since making the transition from Lens back in 2011.
Alongside Madrid club-captain Sergio Ramos, Varane has become one of club football’s most decorated serial winners, helping Los Blancos win four Champions League titles as well as three La Liga triumphs.
However, his current contract at the Bernabéu is due to expire next summer, which has warranted serious interest from a host of European clubs.

Among those top continental heavyweights currently in the running are Paris Saint Germain, as well as United.
English champions Liverpool have also been touted in withholding a mutual admiration for the 2018 Ballon d’Or nominee.
The report claims that Klopp is ‘dreaming’ of signing the 70-time France international, and pairing him alongside Virgil van Dijk – who was pictured back on the training field at the AXA Training Centre on Wednesday.
OkDiario reports that Liverpool have already made their intentions known to Varane regarding a potential transfer this summer.
What RTK has to say
This is certainly a transfer saga we can get behind. First and foremost, Varane has already made it clear that he wants to leave Madrid this summer, per reports from Sport.
Let’s be honest, the prospect of a Van Dijk/ Varane partnership is nothing shy of mouth-watering. Both are among the most successful defenders on the planet, while the pair possess contrasting qualities that would complement each other’s game perfectly.
Ironically, Varane hones a number of physical similarities to Van Dijk’s defensive counterpart, Joe Gomez. Both players are lightning quick and typically take up the understudy role alongside their most experienced teammate.
So, could Liverpool realistically sign him?
Well, given Madrid’s current financial predicament, there is certainly a possibility.
Zinedine Zidane’s Galácticos have suffered heavily as a result of the pandemic and could be forced to sell a number of their prized assets to free up funds this summer.
Among the list of potential summer departures is Varane himself. He has been listed on a summer exit list alongside Isco, Gareth Bale and Marcelo, per OkDiario.
We don’t quite know how much Madrid will likely command for Varane, but given his contractual situation, Liverpool could certainly strike themselves a bargain.
