Some Liverpool supporters on Twitter are certainly not very happy.
And they have good reason to be, too, following another loss in the Premier League for the reigning English champions.
Indeed, Liverpool didn’t deserve anything from the 2-0 defeat to Everton on Saturday. The Blues won their first match across Stanley Park for the first time in 22 years and consigned Liverpool to a fourth straight home defeat for the first time since 1923.
It’s undoubtedly been the toughest spell of Jurgen Klopp’s illustrious Anfield tenure so far.
A number of mitigating circumstances
However, there have been a number of mitigating circumstances that have plagued Liverpool since the beginning of the season.
A catastrophic run of injuries – with Jordan Henderson damaging his groin the latest hammer blow – has ripped the heart and soul out of Klopp’s title-winners.
There have been 18 different centre-back pairings since the dawn of the 2020/21 campaign – an utterly preposterous figure.
Liverpool won the Premier League and Champions League with either Joe Gomez and Joel Matip rotating alongside Virgil van Dijk at the back, with Henderson and Fabinho in midfield. All of the aforementioned names are injured. It doesn’t take a forensic investigation, then, to pin-point why the Reds are struggling.
Also, a number of woeful decisions have gone against Liverpool, too. In fact, Klopp and his team have suffered significantly more as a result of VAR decisions against them, per ESPN.
One of the 11 VAR overturns that have gone against Liverpool occurred over the weekend’s defeat to Everton.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin won a penalty for Carlo Ancelotti’s team on the stroke of 80 minutes following a tangling with Trent Alexander-Arnold.
And some supporters are upset with Mark Clattenburg’s comments that the Liverpool full-back was lucky to escape a red card following the incident.
