Andros Townsend was blown away by Liverpool's Curtis Jones

Crystal Palace winger Andros Townsend has been seriously impressed with Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones.

The former England international spoke in glowing terms about the West Derby academy graduate, who is enjoying a breakout season under Jurgen Klopp this term.

Townsend on Jones

Jones, 20, has seized the opportunity presented in front of him as a result of injuries to key players. He has clocked up an impressive 27 appearances in all appearances this season.

This included an outstanding performance in Liverpool’s recent 2-0 victory in the Champions League against RB Leipzig on Tuesday night, which certainly caught the eye of Townsend.

“He seems so calm and so at ease in his environment,” said Townsend, per talkSPORT. “When you see youngsters coming into the team, at times, they could be frantic or nervous.

“You can see that in their performance when they are not comfortable. But he’s the exact opposite.

“He’s just so cool, calm and collected. It’s so good to see a youngster coming into such a big side such as Liverpool and just performing without any problems, at all.”

What RTK has to say

Townsend is spot-on. No-one would have expected Jones to have made such an impact this season. We certainly didn’t anticipate him spearheading Liverpool towards the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

He started the season as a squad player at best, after all. By the time the 2020/21 campaign had begun, he had just six PL and European appearances to his name.

Fast forward six months later and Jones is one of the first names on Jurgen Klopp’s team-sheet. In recent weeks, he has been picked ahead of James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Xherdan Shaqiri.

However, despite his lack of experience, Jones delivered a performance for the ages in the Hungarian capital.

In total, Jones, who was previously hailed as ‘outstanding‘ by Klopp, led the way in terms of interceptions with three. Leipzig also failed to dribble past him once, per WhoScored.

On the ball, Jones was equally effective, too. He had more touches than any other midfielder or forward, while he assisted the all-important goal for Sadio Mane.

It really was the complete performance from the ‘outstanding’ academy graduate.
