Gary Neville has said that he thinks Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof would be brilliant alongside Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk.
Indeed, there is no comparison in who is the superior player in pretty much every department, but it certainly does raise an interesting prospect.
Neville even went as far to say that if Jurgen Klopp had Lindelof at his disposal, then, alongside Van Dijk, the £31 million [BBC] signing from Benfica would look like an excellent defender.
Remarkably, the Sky Sports pundit said that Lindelof’s current central defensive counterpart, Harry Maguire, doesn’t quite compliment the Sweden international’s best qualities.
“Lindelof’s problem is Maguire. Maguire’s problem is Lindelof,” Neville said, per Sky Sports.

“I think if you put Lindelof alongside Van Dijk at Liverpool, I think he’s a really good player. He understands the game, reads the game, and is a good defender.
“The problem is he is alongside somebody who isn’t the most mobile in Maguire.
“If Liverpool were looking for a centre-back pairing I think he’d do a really good job alongside Van Dijk, but I don’t think he does a good job with Maguire.”
What RTK has to say
First things first, Liverpool are, of course, never going to make a move for Lindelof, given his allegiances to Old Trafford – but Neville does make an interesting case.
Transformative players such as Virgil van Dijk have an infectious aura and confidence that transcends the players around them.
Ruben Dias has had a similar impact at Manchester City, it must be said. Elite game-changers are able to elevate and lift the players around them, as Van Dijk has done with Gomez and Matip in recent seasons.
Meanwhile, Maguire, the world’s most expensive defender, isn’t quite at the level as the likes of Van Dijk and Dias. And as a result, United have had their own defensive problems this season.
