Marseille defender Duje Caleta-Car has opened up on the transfer to Liverpool that almost materialised on the final day of the January transfer window – and supporters have reacted on Twitter.
Jurgen Klopp was forced to bring in additional cover in the centre-back department following the season-ending injuries to Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip.
One of the players who was on the shortlist of potential candidates drawn up by sporting Michael Edwards was Croatia international and 2018 World Cup finalist, Caleta-Car.
Liverpool were even willing to splash out £20 million to land the 24-year-old, per reports from The Independent. However, a move ultimately broke down as Marseille required more time to find a viable replacement.
Alternatively, Caleta-Car now has claimed he himself made the decision to remain in France, despite being flattered by the English champions’ proposed interest.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday ahead of Marseille’s clash with Nice, he said: “Today, there is the Champions League, and I am going to watch the two games (Barcelona v Paris Saint-Germain and RB Leipzig v Liverpool).
“I received an offer from Liverpool. It was an honour for me to know that such a club wanted me.
“We decided with the club that I was going to stay.
“Marseille is also a great club and I still have a lot of improving to do here.”
Caleta-Car has been with the Ligue 1 outfit since 2018, having joined from RB Salzburg, who have also honed the talents of current Liverpool stars, Sadio Mane, Naby Keita and Takumi Minamino.
Having clocked up 130 appearances in Austria prior to his move to Marseille, Caleta-Car has featured 78 times at The Stade Vélodrome.
Let’s see what the Anfield faithful had to say on comments made by Caleta-Car amid interest from Liverpool.
