2021 has so far been cruelly unforgiving to Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp, to say the least. In just a few short weeks, the Reds’ title aspirations have seemingly evaporated despite beginning the year as the chasing pack.
For another Liverpool figure, the dawn of a New Year has brought similar challenges.
Taiwo Awoniyi began the year in the best form of his career, after all. Having swept aside Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen, as well as holding out Bayern Munich to a draw, the Nigerian-born striker looked on course for a tilt at a Champions League finish.
However, since that inspiring 2-1 victory against the likes of Jadon Sancho and Emre Can, Awaniyi and his club side Union Berlin have seriously struggled.
In their previous seven league matches, the Liverpool loanee has won just two matches, claiming seven points from a possible 21.

Awoniyi, 23, too, has endured a dry spell, scoring just once since the turn of the New Year.
And as a result, Union have slipped seven points adrift of a Champions League finish.
They, too, are currently on a barren four-match winless run, while Awoniyi hasn’t found the net since January 2.
Still plenty of games to play
Prior to the 2-0 victory against Werder Bremen, Awoniyi had four goals in his previous five matches.
Similarly to Liverpool, then, he is desperate for an immediate revival in form.
Luckily for Awoniyi, there is time to turn his season around, and in quick-time with winnable games coming up against Schalke, Freiburg and Hoffenheim.
There is still plenty of football still to be played this season, and Awoniyi has showcased he has the quality to turn things around.
