Jordan Henderson has delivered an emphatic response on Instagram in the aftermath of Liverpool’s 4-1 defeat to Manchester City on Sunday – and Rugby World Cup-winning captain Siya Kolisi has reacted.
The reigning English champions went into the Anfield spectacle seven points behind Pep Guardiola’s league leaders following a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Brighton last Wednesday. This, then, was a dubbed as a must-win game for Jurgen Klopp and his players.
Unfortunately, this was anything but the case, as two horror mistakes from Alisson Becker ultimately gift-wrapped a first Anfield win for City since 2003.
An error-strewn five minute period completely altered the landscape of the match. That is, even after Ilkay Gundogan missed a penalty and then for Mohamed Salah to score a penalty of his own – after Gundogan had made amends to put City ahead early in the second half.
Alisson, 28, then gave the ball away twice during a 10-second period – which was duly punished by Phil Foden, who squared the ball for Gundogan to double his tally for the afternoon.

It was a calamitous few minutes for the Brazilian shot-stopper, who gave the ball away again moments later. This time, Bernado Silva turned provider for Raheem Sterling to score his first goal against Liverpool at Anfield.
Foden compounded Alisson’s misery further after blasting home an emphatic fourth goal, to take City 10 points clear of champions Liverpool, despite having played a game less.
So, it seems Liverpool’s title defence is all but over, at least for this season anyway. Still, there is lots to play for with a top-four finish still on the line for Klopp’s players.
Luckily, the Reds don’t appear to be feeling sorry for themselves with club-captain Henderson epitomising the team’s drive and determination to make matters right, particularly for the supporters.
The 30-year-old skipper posted a message on Instagram in the aftermath of Liverpool’s third consecutive Anfield defeat – their worst run since 1963.
Henderson’s message certainly resonated with a number of Kopites, including South African rugby icon Kolisi.
The 29-year-old flanker, who lifted the World Cup trophy in Japan back in September 2019, was quick to respond to Henderson’s attempts to galvanize a struggling group of players.
Kolisi, who has been an avid supporter of Liverpool for many years, hailed Henderson’s post by replying: ‘My leader.’
