Arsenal defender Shkodran Mustafi has been mentioned as a possible centre-back target for Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool – and it has certainly got supporters talking on Twitter.
The suggestion comes from Jermaine Jenas, per BT Sport. He says Liverpool could consider the Arsenal man who is out of favour under manager Mikel Arteta.
Mustafi to Liverpool really?
Still only 28, Mustafi, a former Everton player, is as experienced as they come with a World Cup winners medal at his possession.
The former Valencia star is out of contract this summer, after all, and Arsenal could be prepared to accept a moderate fee for the German defender to avoid the risk of losing him for free come to the end of the season.
Since his £36 million [tranfermarkt] arrival from La Liga, Mustafi has clocked up 151 appearances for Arsenal under managers Arsene Wenger, Unai Emery and now Arteta.

Indeed, the prospect of the Reds signing Mustafi would have been laughable at the beginning of last season, but Liverpool’s current need for a centre-back is off the scale.
Both Joel Matip and Fabinho suffered injuries on Thursday evening as Liverpool overcame Tottenham Hotspur in a 3-1 victory.
And as a result of the double setback, Jurgen Klopp has just Nathaniel Phillips and Rhys Williams as his only naturally suited options in central defence.
With that said, the addition of a World Cup-winning defender, then, suddenly doesn’t seem so outrageous given inaction is no longer an option for Liverpool.
Even Klopp himself has conceded that short-term fixes are now a possibility for Liverpool and are under consideration by the club.
“You can imagine we think about everything. I am not picky but we need to find the right player. It’s incredible what’s happened with the defensive line,” Klopp said.
So, does this warrant a cause for Liverpool to move for Mustafi? In short, yes.
The reality is that Liverpool aren’t going to find someone of Van Dijk’s ilk on the current market. In the absence of funds to sign an elite-level game-changer, a quick-fix is what the Reds need above all else.
He doesn’t need to be a world-beater, either. He just needs to be better than what Klopp is currently able to pick from, and with respect, that shouldn’t be too difficult.
To say that Phillips and Williams are a cut above Mustafi is a little premature, given the former was playing in Bundesliga 2 last season and the latter in National League North.
Is Mustafi perfect? No. In fact, far from it. Would he do a job under the given circumstances? Absolutley.
The fact we are contemplating the signing of an out-of-favour player who can’t get into the Arsenal team says everything you need to know about Liverpool’s current necessity for an addition.
Forget whether you can afford to do something, Liverpool cannot afford to be inactive ahead of Monday’s transfer deadline.
It wouldn’t be an understatement to say Liverpool’s season could depend on it.
Let’s what how the Anfield faithful had to say on the mentions of Liverpool moving for Mustafi…
