The Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard comparison goes on following Chelsea sacking

Liverpool supporters have been quick to make the Frank Lampard comparison with Steven Gerrard following the former England international’s sacking as Chelsea manager.

Lampard, 42, was dismissed from his duties at Stamford Bridge on Monday morning, leaving the Blues ninth in the Premier League standings.

Thomas Tuchel is expected to take the reigns from the Champions League and Premier League-winning captain, according to The Athletic.

Lampard’s departure from the London-based club has unsurprisingly fuelled comparisons with his former midfield counterpart Gerrard.

Both players were extensively compared to each other during their playing days with both Gerrard and Lampard amongst the finest midfielders the Premier League has ever seen.

As a result, it felt inevitable that the two would continue their media-fuelled rivalry as managers.

Two footballing giants

Lampard and Gerrard both took up their post in management at relatively the same time. The former began his journey with Derby County back in 2018, reaching the play-off finals before returning to Chelsea the following season.

Gerrard, meanwhile, also entered the world of management in 2018. The former Liverpool captain took up the reins at Rangers. He is currently in his third season at Ibrox.

The 114-time England international is currently enjoying his best campaign yet as Bears manager. Gerrard is on course to win Rangers’ first league title in a decade with the team currently 23 points ahead of champions Celtic.

Rangers are thriving in Europe, too. The Gers are through to the last 32 of the Europa League, having won a group that also consisted of Benfica, Standard Liege and Lech Poznan.

For Lampard, his time in management has been less progressive. Having guided Chelsea to a top-four finish last season, the former West Ham star leaves the club off the back of two wins in eight Premier League matches.

Gerrard, who has been heavily tipped to succeed Jurgen Klopp at Anfield, remains an iconic figure on Merseyside and a number of Liverpool supporters were quick to highlight as such following the Lampard axing.
