Liverpool supporters react to reports Klopp is tracking Declan Rice

Some Liverpool supporters are very open to the possibility of signing Declan Rice after reports from The Guardian emerged that the Reds were linked with the West Ham midfielder.

The 10-time England international is one of the most coveted players in the Premier League, and it appears that Liverpool are amongst the interested parties.

An ideal fit?

Unsurprisingly, the prospect of Liverpool signing a player of Rice’s calibre is a welcomed one when you factor in a number of underlying factors.

For one, Rice is only 22 and has already clocked up a whopping 130 appearances for West Ham. Most recently, the former Chelsea youngster has been called upon by David Moyes to captain the Hammers.

Also, Rice, an established international, is among the most versatile players in the Premier League, too. He can effectively play in a number of positions in midfield as well as across the defensive back-line.

This will certainly bode well with Jurgen Klopp, who currently would benefit from a player of Rice’s quality. Similarly to Fabinho, he can effortlessly slot in at centre-back were he ever needed.

Indeed, Liverpool signing Rice is still a precarious subject. West Ham have been reluctant to sell him in the past and the Reds could baulk at the Hammers’ £80 million asking-price.

There is the added complication of Chelsea, too. According to Fabrizio Romano, Rice has his heart set on returning to his former club, but as ever in football, developments can change very quickly.

Still, the prospect of Liverpool investing heavily in midfield is an ambiguous one. Gini Wijnaldum’s likely departure warrants a need to add a replacement, for sure.

Rice, then, would be more than an adequate long-term replacement, especially given his added versatility.

Again, however, Liverpool’s current financial struggles make this a deal easy to dismiss from the board’s perspecitve.

Liverpool have already faced losses of £100m as a result of the pandemic, after all, so the prospect of signing Rice is unlikely.

One thing is for certain, however, if Liverpool are to complete a deal for the in-demand midfielder, it will certainly be a welcomed addition in the eyes of Kopites.
