Joel Matip is in a desperate race against time to return to fitness ahead of Liverpool’s titanic encounter with Manchester United on Sunday – and Reds supporters have reacted on Twitter.
The Mirror reports that Matip could miss the top-of-the-table clash at Anfield following the adductor injury he sustained against West Brom on December 27.
The Reds will welcome United at the weekend with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his team three points above Liverpool at the Premier League summit.
As a result of United’s 1-0 victory at Burnley last night, Liverpool cannot afford to surrender any further ground in the title race. This is a match Jurgen Klopp and his team simply cannot afford to lose.
With that said, Matip’s availability, then, becomes all the more important. The Cameroonian defender is too big a miss for such a gargantuan encounter.

Liverpool cannot afford to utilise Jordan Henderson in central defence again, while Rhys Williams and Nat Phillips are too inexperienced for such a gargantuan encounter.
Matip has an unfavourable record in terms of durability, but his importance to the team when he is available is without dispute. He hasn’t lost a Premier League match since January 2018, after all.
Alongside Fabinho, Matip is arguably Liverpool’s most important player at present. If the pair can avoid injury for the remainder of the campaign, it could go a long way in deciding the outcome of the Premier League title.
Reaction to Matip reports
Unsurprisingly, Kopites share a similar outlook in regards to the importance of Matip. A number of fans have taken to Twitter following the defender’s latest injury update.
